Duncan Moody

Photographer

Duncan began his journey as a photographer while still in high school. His early efforts resulted in shaky snapshots taken with a Kodak Brownie camera. After high school, he did a stint of military service followed by a few years at Rhodes University. A college friend who had access to a darkroom introduced him to Black & White film photography.

After college, he joined the Camera Club of Johannesburg. A fantastic group of mentors coached him into seeing and recording better photographs. The next logical step was to build his first makeshift darkroom in his tiny apartment. This solid foundation paved the way to an amateur career filled with many awards, trophies, newspaper credits, publications, and book covers.

While Duncan’s knowledge and expertise grew, he paid back by sharing his knowledge with younger photographers. Over the years he served on the boards of several photography clubs. These included the East London Photographic Society (ELPS), Photographic Society of Southern Africa (PSSA), and the Piedmont Photo Club in Winston-Salem.

Duncan’s method of photography may have morphed over the years. Digital capture has replaced most of the black & white and slide films of yesteryear.  But photography is still big a part of his life. He loves the thrill when everything comes together in a photograph.  When the image captures the unique beauty and grace of a fleeting moment. Sometimes it simply takes his breath away.

His family has an extensive collection of photographs depicting various events and milestones. Some are around 100 years ago, others are only a few days old. He loves seeing the reaction when people stop to look at pictures on the wall or in an album. The smiles that slowly grow from little grins to heartwarming, beaming moments of remembered joy.  This is when he feels confident that those captured memories are priceless.

“In my photography, I strive to capture the moments that will put a smile on someone else’s face 20, 30, or 50 years from now.” DM

Linda Moody

Studio Assistant, Coach, Costumer ...

Linda grew up as a farm girl near King William’s Town, a small town in South Africa. She spent her high school years at Kaffrarian Girls High School (now Kingsridge High School for Girls), an all-girls school. Duncan had a similar background and went to Dale College an all-boys school in the same town. He knew Linda’s brothers long before they met.

Linda attended Rhodes University in Grahamstown, a small college city. After graduating, she joined Duncan in Johannesburg. They married more than 40 years ago and had three children. After a few years, they relocated to East London, a coastal city in South Africa. She pursued a career as a school teacher, while Duncan worked in the field of Information Technology. Duncan’s work led them to the USA in 1994. They settled in Winston-Salem, and have lived in the Piedmont Triad area ever since.

Linda spent many years teaching Theatre Arts in Forsyth County North Carolina. This experience helps us in many aspects of the studio. She is great at relaxing a tense subject and revealing character through expression. Finally, she’s experienced in set design, costuming, and styling.
