Eightieth Carolina Cup
The Carolina Cup Races were run on March 31st 2012 for the 80th time at the historic Springdale Race Course, Camden, South Carolina.
“The Carolina Cup is for everyone – from families to college students. Since 1930, the Carolina Cup race day has been a time honored rite of Spring, a tradition that has been passed on from generation to generation, throughout the Southeast, up and down the East Coast, across the nation, and the world.” – Race Director.
My dear friends the McCashins have spoken about the steeplechase several times in the past. This year I was offered the opportunity to join them at the event. I had a pass that allowed me to wander around almost anywhere I chose. They people were very friendly and no-one seemed concerned with the photographers. A few patrons even hammed it up for my camera.
Thank you so much to the McCashins, and I hope these pictures bring back fond memories. They certainly will for me!
“The King & I” – R.J.Reynolds High School
Having a wife who is a Theater Arts Teacher, I have watched every year as she hustles and coerces her students into shape. I usually watch a rehearsal about two weeks out from the scheduled performance. I often thought they were moving towards disaster, only to be pleasantly surprised to see the eventual performance which was almost unrecognizable from the mess I had seen two weeks previously.
This year was slightly different in that my wife now teaches at R.J. Reynolds High School, an Arts Magnet High School in Winston-Salem, NC. “The King & I” is based on the true story of Anna Leonowens and her influence on the court of the King of Siam. From the beginning I knew this production was definitely on a different level, and I had not had the opportunity to see any rehearsals prior to the performance. I was totally amazed to see the polished performance on stage, flawlessly run by students backstage. The actors were superlative, the costumes breathtaking and the performance one of the best I have ever seen, including numerous professional shows.
At her request, I have photographed most of my wife’s shows in order to provide an visual record for her and the students. I hope this time I have done justice to this wonderful event.
Carolina Modeling Group – Charleston SC
A group of photographers, models, stylists and various family members met in Charleston SC over the weekend of March 17 and 18. The weather was perfect but the bugs were, well, behaving like nasty bugs. I joined the group just before sunrise at a beach access off East Ashley Rd, Folly Beach. Later we went to the public access below the bridge over the Cooper River. More visits to Folly Beach Saturday evening and Sunday morning. All too soon the weekend was over and it was back to the daily grind.

Spontaneous Posing
I visited the Carolina Renaissance Festival on November 12th, 2011. One of my shooting methods in a situation like this is to select a spot and observe the visitors and participants streaming past. Occasionally someone will attract my attention and I will try to capture an image or two. I saw this lady in a Jester costume, lifted the camera and she struck a pose. She took a step and struck another pose. Then another. And another. With each pose I took a picture. Soon she was too close to me and I lowered my camera. We smiled at each other and she was gone. No words, no directing, just eye contact and an appreciative nod.
Time of first shot 12:23:13 pm. Time of last shot 12:23:25 pm. 12 seconds of sheer bliss!

All for Sammi Jumper Show
Sammi Majors was seriously injured in a riding accident on Saturday Jan 14th, near Charlotte, NC. After some days in hospital she is recovering but will be confined to a wheelchair for several weeks.
The scheduled event on Sat Feb 4th was turned into the “All for Sammi Jumper Show”. The forecast called for mild, cloudy weather with rain in the late afternoon. Well, they got it wrong! Throughout the day the rain came and went, but fortunately not enough to dampen the goodwill and enthusiasm. Also not enough to force the photographer to run for cover. Actually the soft lighting was ideal for most of the day through the late afternoon until the camera groaned and gave up. Apologies to the last few riders of the day.
All proceeds to benefit Sammi Majors Relief Fund.
