"This Festival is a full day of entertainment and pageantry as history comes alive with hundreds of costumed characters re-creating a 16th Century European Marketplace. It's a 25-acre outdoor, open air village nestled in the forest and meadows, complete with castles, cottages, kitchens and pubs, filled with activities. You'll find music, comedy and theater, food and drink, fine hand-made arts and crafts, artisan demonstrations, games and rides." Carolina Renaissance Festival

My Visit - November 1.

As a photographer, I walked into the Carolina Renaissance Festival on a cool fall morning, camera bag slung over my shoulder, excited at the prospect of capturing images of the fun. It’s held in a wooded area outside Charlotte, North Carolina, with thatched buildings, jousting areas, and vendor booths full of activity. The gates opened at 9:30 a.m., and the parking fields were already filling up with cars from all over. I grabbed a map at the entrance and headed straight in, passing the ticket booths where staff in period garb greeted everyone with smiles and “good morrows.”

The outfits were bright and creative: women in exquisite formal ensembles, pirates with red sashes and tricorn hats, fairies, elves, and people in masks. Laughter was everywhere. You could hear the clanging of the blacksmith’s hammer, the strum of lutes from a nearby stage, and the cheers from the jousting arena. Food smells—roasted turkey legs, sausage-on-a-stick, and fresh-baked pretzels -filled the air.

My method was simple—pick a spot with a good background and light, wait for the right moment, take a few shots, then move on to the next suitable area. Most photos were quick candids, composed and focused in a second. Sometimes, if there was time and an interaction with a willing subject, I’d offer subtle directions or coaching.

The best smiles came from families enjoying the day—parents lifting kids up to see the aerial performers on silks, strangers chatting and connecting, and everyone complimenting costumes.

By late afternoon, the sun dipped low, casting golden light through the trees and framing faces with a lovely halo.  My feet ached from miles of walking on dirt paths, and my energy was running low, but the day was well worth it.

The festival runs Saturdays and Sundays through November 23 and each day brings new crowds and new anticipation. Volunteers and performers work hard to keep the spirit light and welcoming. If you go, wear comfortable shoes, bring cash for tips and small purchases, and don’t rush—there’s something photo-worthy around every bend. By the end, I was tired from hours of concentration but had hundreds of genuine, joyful photos with which to work. The festival was a great place full of real happiness.
